The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in utilizing replay systems.
Video review technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.
Competitors will gain the right to question certain rulings from the official, following the protocol already in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.
This development comes just a season following the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the 147-year role of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to review specific situations, such as:
- If a ball has double-bounced.
- If a ball touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
- Possible hindrance end of a point.
Notably, there is no limit on the amount of reviews a player can ask for.
A Recent Example
An illustrative example took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.
Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."
The umpire viewed a video and determined Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.
Other Changes
A further innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This solves instances where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was in or out.
Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
