Seven accused individuals of Germany's far-left group face trial over multiple violent incidents

A group of seven people accused of being the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost began their trial on Tuesday, facing charges for attacks targeting far-right activists that resulted in the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

International terrorist designation and legal charges

Recently, the United States designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist group together with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors claim the network was behind attacks on locations in the country and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are said to have employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several with serious injuries.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is expected to run until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G. and Paul M, also face charges for attacks in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, coinciding with an annual event known as the “day of honour” that attracts far-right participants from across Europe.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T., is currently on trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against far-right activists prior to the same rally in that year.

Historical background and organizational structure

The former East Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a high-ranking member within the organization, tasked with organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities overseen by the suspect, the network allegedly accumulated hammers, irritant sprays, disguises and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and global responses

Another militant formerly involved with the organization, Lina E, emerged as a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing makes group members barred from entering the US, freezes any assets they may have within the world’s largest economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany applauded the US decision and called on the German administration to take similar action. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The danger from the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have received convictions or are in custody.”
