New research indicates that people who come off new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Users buying such treatments should be cognizant of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the medication ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.
Comparing Approaches
The study, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
The team note that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally see a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Doctors suggest the mode of action of the injections accounts for the amplified rebound.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."
A Chronic Disease?
The NHS suggest the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts argue that, considering the high risk of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have come off the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"It felt as if a switch activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said one woman.
This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Widespread Use
Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Use is higher among women than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success relies on ongoing behavioural support.
