EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures that were central to campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
